Why Adopt?
Drawing of dogs and cats titled "Not Just A Gift But a Friend for Life"
It is the hope of the Oregon Humane Society that people wishing to find pets, or to give them up, will utilize the resources of these various dog rescue organizations.

It's estimated that there are 54.2 million pet dogs in the U.S. representing thirty-six percent of U.S. households. The American Humane Association estimated that in 1992, six million stray dogs entered shelters. Sixty-one percent of the stray dogs were euthanized. In Oregon in 1994, approximately 88,994 dogs and cats entered animal shelters, 29,803 were adopted out and 45,245 had to be euthanized.

Adoption has many rewards. People looking for family pets often don?t realize these advantages.

When you adopt:

* You get a friend with a developed personality and a known temperament

* You usually don't have to go through the trauma of housebreaking a puppy or teaching the puppy not to chew your furniture, car seats, carpeting, $300 leather jacket, or new wool sweater.

* You get a friend who bonds with you very quickly and will be forever grateful for giving him or her a good home, and

* You get the reward of knowing that you saved a life.
